What did I read Saturday morning?

Roberts expects the current rancor over embryonic stem-cell research to subside with time, much like early criticism of in vitro fertilization - which also involves the manipulation and destruction of embryos - is now an accepted practice in family planning. "I think it will just be routine," he said. "We'll look back and say, 'What was all the fuss about?"'

Celebrity/environment news

#3: Paul Newman opened a new restaurant that sounds pretty awesome.

#6: 50 Cent loves George Bush AND the environment? I think I found a new friend.

Check out #3 and #6.

(I know this website might be problematic for some of you, but humor me. "James Carville" has some influence, you know.)

And yes, I know I just linked to John's post laughing about global warming, but it was the smoking thing in particular that made me chuckle. I'm reasonable people. I like the local market idea because I like small businesses and I like my health. I like 50 Cent because he called Bush a "gangsta." Feel free to inquire further if you are perplexed.

Global warming hilarity

Best part?

I could hear my friend and fellow former TH intern laughing when I read this.

Poll tax to party for Hillary?

GOP and College has a brilliant post up about everyone's favorite former first lady.

It's a "poll tax" to require a photo ID to vote (even if it's free), but it's cool to charge a "poll tax" at a party for Hillary?

The D stands for dumb.

Democrats for Life? Or...not?

I got really excited about the Pregnant Women Support Act when I heard about it on realVerse today.

That was over when I clicked on the link and read about it.

A Democrat-sponsored bill that helps pregnant women? Could it be true? Sure, Democrats for Life might be excited about it, but the only Republican in the interview is not impressed:

Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), co-chair of the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus, said Ryan's bill would "lead to more abortions, not less" because the increased funding for contraception would to go family planning clinics that also offer abortions, according to Women's Health News.

Sigh. More details will be released next Wednesday, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Bad news for the Republican majority

Rep. Foley of Florida resigns from Congress over e-mails he sent to a former page.

The grossest part is that he was the founder of the Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus.

The saddest part is that, according to the AP, he was "a shoo-in for a new term until the e-mail correspondence surfaced in recent days." We need every seat we can get (err...keep).

Mary Katharine has more.

UPDATE: Hugh has part of the Florida election law posted.

Don't take my word for it

Take Hugh's.

You have just over one month to help Republicans keep control of Congress. What are you doing about it?

Girl Scout cookies for our troops

Haystack emailed me this morning to fill me in on a fantastic initiative over at A Soldier's Perspective:

It’s that time of year again. The second annual Girl Scouts to Cav Scouts cookie drive is under way (see previous effort HERE). [...] You can see the cookies being sold this year HERE. The cost is $5 per box, which buys the cookies and helps with the shipping and handling. If you’d like to send a box (or boxes) of Girl Scout Cookies to the soldiers, use the Girl Scouts to Cav Scouts donate button to the right. My goal this year is 200 boxes, since last time we sent about 100.

[...] Send the information to everyone on your email lists, blogs, and friends at home and work. Ask your bosses if they’ll sponsor a case (12 boxes) of cookies. Anissa has a (somewhat unrealistic) goal to sell 750 total, which will include cookies she sells separately in the area. MY goal is just to double the 100 boxes we sent last year. Let’s get started!!

Visit A Soldier's Perspective today to purchase cookies. I'm going to pass the word along to all everyone I can. Please support our troops!

Before I head to class and NYC...

  • I mistakenly posted that the Mary Matalin event in St. Louis was today, Thursday, when I wrote about it yesterday. I corrected that post. Here's the report on what happened at the event from Jo Mannies, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Political Fix. (And for those of you wondering about yesterday's post, I received the "Mary Matalin Award" from the CUA College Republicans sophomore year "for being married to a flaming liberal." And I'm happy to report that "Carville" and I are still going strong.)

For now, I'm heading to my poetry and philosophy classes, then back here to (who am I kidding, blog) and pack for my trip to NYC. I hope to make a 3:30 or 4:00 Chinatown bus. See you at lunchtime!

Married people are smarter than single people

Married people are more likely to vote Republican and single people are more likely to vote Democrat.

Makes sense, seeing as families are more likely to care about saving money, protecting life, supporting troops...you name it.

(And people wonder why I never dreamed of being a doctor or a teacher when I was little; I just dreamed of being married.)
