Have you heard about Troop Talk Radio?

Haystack is at it again, uncovering a remarkable veteran significantly contributing to the growing field of military media.

Trip told me that his CO, LTC Kyle McClelland, advised him and every other Soldier that went on R & R from FOB Summerall in Baghdad from Feb 2004 to Feb 2005 to:

[B]e proud of what you have accomplished and be proud to tell people your story! People want to know your story!

Trip took that to heart, and decided he needed to do that AFTER he shipped home as well. He knew all the good that was being done there; knew that we were fighting a critical fight and taking the GWoT to the enemy on their soil so we could be safer here at home. He knew the US Military was fighting for the Freedoms and Liberties of the Iraqi people, and the fight was just and right. Sadly, he ALSO knew that these stories of Heroes, and Honor, and Pride, and Sacrifice were NOT being told back at home; his countrymen and his families and friends, and those of the thousands of Soldiers there along side him in this fight were not being told of the good being done. He decided he needed to do his part to change that, and Troop Talk Radio was born.

Go to his blog to read more. Troop Talk Radio is set to become quite a hit.

Winning with the war

Apparently, Lamont is trailing Lieberman in Connecticut.

I don't know where I've been.

Thanks, Tucker, for setting me straight. (He aired his show from right outside the Billygoat! It's a great "Chicago bar" here in DC that I'd go to any day...unless of course they were showing a Cubs game.)

By the way, I haven't watched Tucker in awhile. He has these crazy little factoid boxes pop up. It's almost like a cross between the old "Pop Up Video" on VH1 and a blog itself, with a "link" to a previous story embedded within a post. This is one more reason for me to heart Tucker Carlson.

Class gets in the way...

See, this is what happens when I do what I'm supposed to do and actually make it to all my classes today.

I miss out on the man who might have been the Commander in Chief insulting America's troops in Iraq.

Luckily, the blogosphere is on fire with responses for me to read instead of preparing for senior seminar. Oops.

Treat?

I don't like to dress up for Halloween anymore, but I adore the fact that I could dress up however I wanted.

I had not considered a burka costume.
Maybe next year...

I'll be around later, I promise

Traffic today is nice. I must liveblog more.

In the meantime, I have just finished two classes and need to go get lunch and attend class #3. I'll be around between 3pm and 4pm to blog a bit before my senior seminar class at 4:10pm.

Tuesdays are busy for me. So sorry about that.

Oh, and by the way, apparently some people don't consider Missouri part of the "Midwest." In fact, a fellow blogger said last night that I was from the "Interior West." I'm appalled! This is about as shocking as learning that Cindy Crawford had plastic surgery, or that Rev. Moon owns the Washington Times. Let me know if y'all have any thoughts.

LIVEBLOGGING: Mary Katharine Ham on Larry King Live

Mary Katharine is getting lots of attention from the mainstream media. She appeared on CNN this weekend and will be on Larry King Live any minute now.

Stay tuned...

To start things out, Larry King interviewed the mother and girlfriend of a firefighter who died in California's massive wildfire, now believed to be the result of arson. I am so glad Larry King (LK from here on out) gave the matter attention, but that was definitely the most awkward interview of my life. My roommate and I think he was trying a little too hard to sound like Dr. Phil. Why on earth is it LK's place to tell a mother and girlfriend that they should "go on?" Very uncomfortable for everyone.

Update: Where is MKH? We have James Carville (JC), Laura Ingraham (LI), and David Gergen (DG) on board for now. Gergen points out that it's interesting to note that George Bush appears in more Democratic ads than Republican ads. Carville says this is all about Iraq. Ingraham says that the Democrats who look like they might succeed are fairly moderate, maybe even conservative, so Reagan might even be smiling down on us. A CNN poll says that Iraq is the #1 issue for the upcoming midterm elections.

Update: DG says that stem cell research is going to be a "wedge issue" for the Democrats. He says it has a 56% support in Missouri right now. LI points out that Michael J. Fox admitted that he did not read the amendment. What's missing is the debate on the facts, she says. JC says there is no debate in the medical field. (He's wrong, by the way. I'll add that link in a minute. Update: Here ya go.) LI interrupts and brings us back to the issue of cloning. DG says there is new research that doesn't involve killing the embryos, but as LI points out--that's not what Amendment 2 is about. ("Laura, let me finish. This is my show." Good one, Larry.) JC brings up my best friend--Danforth--and says that "running against" stem cell research is a poor choice for the Republicans (and he really means Talent). DC says the Stem Cell Initiative is going to "win" (I like how he phrases that) and says that McCaskill's campaign is definitely going to be helped by the attention that the stem cell issue has gotten.

Update: JC says the "nastiness" of the campaigns doesn't seem to be working. Very good point - for once. He says it is not effective in light of the failures in and involving Iraq. DG says that many of the negative campaign ads backfire on some candidates. It has struck him that ALL the ads right now are negative. LI calls it a "restless populous." LI points out that we've seen vicious campaigns in this nation since 1796, and claims that not much has changed. The difference is that now we have a media to amplify it. She says Democrats better win big if they want to make a difference. All three of them seem to be avoiding specific predictions. DG says the election is going to be more exciting than the World Series. Very offensive, Mr. Gergen. I'm not ok with that. LI says there will be a big GOP turnout and JC says it will be average. DG says Berns might still take the Montana race and that Corker might do better than the polls suggest.

Update: I think MKH will be up any minute now. LK says he is going to hear from radio and Internet about next week... And we're back. Stephanie Miller (SM) is on. Lars Larson (LL) is on, too. John Aravosis (JA) from AmericaBlog.com. SM says Democrats have the momentum and it's at a point where...she's concerned about the electronic voting systems. Lars says the American public cares about being safe...and not having Nancy Pelosi run the country. John says America wants 2 parties back in DC. MKH says that Steele's momentum is great and it is really telling that we even have a shot in New Jersey and Maryland.  MKH say there is certainly blame to go around and Democrats won't take any responsibility on the issue of national security, even going so far as t o isolate those Democrats with some war-credibility. MKH is confident about the Senate, but not so much about the House. SM bites back at MKH and says she is not far left. JA says MKH might have been right 12 years ago... ouch.

Update: DG is mildly concerned about the electronic voting machines. (I think this is the Democrats way of stalling the issue. Not a good move for them.) LL wants purple fingers back. JA is concerned about the people whose names are being cut off the machine. It's crazy. SM says the biggest concern is that our vote is privatized. WHAT?! She just semi-accused all the voting machine companies of rigging the elections!!! MKH is "partial to paper" (very cute) and points out that she thinks voter IDs are good. There are other problems involved here. She agrees with me - the Democrats haven't done themselves any favors by going on the attack about the electronic system. JA is outraged by the fact that a country as advanced as ours still can't get this right.

Update: SM is going to party like it's 1999 if the Democrats win both houses. (Yikes!) LL says Republicans need to clean up and point out that Dems winning is a "prescription for disaster." It won't be the same ol' thing if Republicans win. JA thinks that we will "finally see how governments are supposed to work" if Dems win both houses. (I find that very unlikely.) He also claims to have no idea if we are winning or losing in Iraq and notes that he would like to know what is really going on. (I know a few milbloggers and their friends who would love to tell him about it. Maybe I'll shoot him an email...) MKH says she might need to party like it's 1999 with SM if the Dems take both houses--because she'll need a drink. (Can I come, too?) She also thinks that Republicans will shape up their act a bit because they "will have gotten a bit of a spanking from their base." They will improve on the financial issue--and we will stay in Iraq and get the job done.

Bigger is not always better.

Limited government is good?! Why hasn't anyone thought of this before?!

(My wise friend John at An American Ultramontane just made me laugh out loud, so I had to share this with all of you.)

St. Louis is #1...

...in baseball and danger.

Guess who is #2 on the list of most dangerous cities? Detroit. They will never beat us!! HA!

Please note, I am mostly kidding. I am not actually excited about my home-sweet-home being so dangerous, but I don't mind it either. How could I, as a temporary resident of the Federal City? It's like my dad said: "I guess danger follows you wherever you go."

"Wrong Way for Labor"

I am certainly no expert in labor matters, nor will I pretend to be, but this is too hilarious to miss. Everyone can appreciate it.

(Thank you to David W. Kralik of the National Association of Manufacturers for sending this my way.)

I'm not waiting on the world to change

"Waiting on the World to Change" (the latest single from John Mayer) came on the radio this morning as I was driving to Regnery, and it hit me: this does not speak for me at all. What good does it do to wait around for the world to get better?

I know it is my responsibility to change the world, one step at a time.

Lazy liberals wait around for the government to come up with something to fix their problems or for some extreme change to occur. They are sure that human beings will fail if we are left to help ourselves, so they lean on the government to take control of the situation.

Now we see everything is going wrong
With the world and those who lead it
We just feel like we don't have the means
To rise above and beat it
So we keep waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change

They try to make excuses in vain.

It's not that we don't care
We just know that the fight ain't fair
So we keep on waiting (waiting)

"Ain't fair?" Then do something about it! I don't expect anyone or any government to fix everything. Governments are composed of the same imperfect people that sometimes fail. Me? I would rather bank on taking action.

I just filled out my absentee ballot.

Please VOTE next week. Don't keep on waiting (waiting), waiting on the world to change.

WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS

Congratulations to the St. Louis Cardinals and all of their devoted fans!

This has been a long time coming. In fact, this is the first time the Cardinals have won the Series in my lifetime!!

I'm still in shock...

GO CARDS!

Medved on the stem cell issue, and why he's not entirely correct

From Michael Medved:

On both these divisive issues, liberals use lying language - habitually, deliberately, shamelessly. Concerning stem cells, the mainstream media regularly suggest that conservatives want to “ban stem cell research.” Aside from ignoring the essential distinctive between research involving adult stem cells (research that’s never been controversial) and science involving embryonic stem cell experimentation (which has always inspired sharp controversy), the talk of a “stem cell ban” hides the even more important difference between government permitting - and government promoting - a course of action. Conservatives don’t want stem cell research banned - but we don’t want our tax money used for that purpose. If Michael J. Fox and his friends want to raise private funds for the medical research they desire, then there’s no legal or political block to this undertaking. The money invested in his manipulative TV spot opposing Senator Jim Talent of Missouri (and distorting his record) easily could have gone directly to research on embryonic stem cells. I don’t want to ban that research - any more than I want to ban handguns (to cite another controversial issue of personal choice). But I’d strongly oppose a government program to buy revolvers for private homes - because people can do it themselves, and many (if not most) American taxpayers don’t want their money used that way. The stem cell issue isn’t a debate over scientific freedom - it’s a debate of governmental subsidies.

Mr. Medved makes some excellent points here. Yes, the money used to make the ads and pay the participants should go to research. Yes, conservatives like myself have a problem with our tax dollars funding this research.

But even this intelligent criticism of the situation does not hit at the heart of what's going on in Missourah. What about the permission granted to fertility and research clinics to take advantage of poor women, drawn to the appeal of easy money but not shown the true risks? What about the millions of embryos that will be made for this purpose and just discarded in a trash can? What about the fact that the "Deceptive Cloning Initiative" will grant permission for people to be copied just like Dolly the sheep?

The stem cell issue is, for me and most, neither a debate over scientific freedom, nor a debate of government subsidies. It is a debate of ethics.

Get the facts. Speak up for those who have no voice. Spread the truth. Help Missouri help itself.

Me? I'm off to fill out my ballot and say NO to Amendment 2.

How the left and right might celebrate Halloween...

Debating which horror film to watch this weekend? Select a spook-tacular choice from one of two lists: horror films for left-wingers and horror films for right-wingers.

(Note that I abhor horror films myself, and this list is entirely a joke.)

In case you hadn't noticed...

...I learned how to embed YouTube video into my blog this morning. I promise I won't always be this obnoxious with the YouTube clips. In the meantime, humor me.
