"If you're scared, don't show it."

This is my song of the week, while I try to get through exams and find an apartment. It's catchy, and it's got a great message.

If you're going through hell, keep on moving.

Representing D.C. is unconstitutional

It has long been argued that D.C. should have a vote in Congress. The licence plates of the cars in the District even read "No Taxation Without Representation," a concept embedded in our nation's revolution. So what's the problem?

Heritage In Focus explains the three reasons why Congressional representation for D.C. is unconstitutional:

No stance on record, but a higher approval rating?

John Combest reports that among actual gun owners, Claire McCaskill’s approval is at 47%, while Matt Blunt’s is at 46%.

On his blog this morning, John challenged wannabe pollsters to explain this discrepancy. I thought I'd give it my best shot while waiting for a staff meeting to begin. I didn't want to spend more than a few minutes browsing around for an answer, but to my surprise, nearly all the websites I found with just a quick Google search or two said that Sen. McCaskill has no stance on gun control on record.

So, this week when I decide to procrastinate studying for my final exams, I am going to be doing a little reading of my own. In the meantime, anyone with their own theory or interpretation is welcome to post a comment below or email me at katie(dot)favazza(at)gmail(dot)com.

Green Eggs and HamNation

I'll let Mary Katharine explain this week's HamNation to you all:
Harry Reid said this week that, if Gen. Petraeus reported progress in Iraq, he would just choose not to believe him. Pesty victory problem solved.

When he said that, he reminded me of the guy in "Green Eggs and Ham." So, today, a poetry reading in the style of "Green Eggs and Ham," with Petraeus as General Fooz (because nothing rhymes with Petraeus), and Harry Reid as that grumpy old guy.

You should have seen how much fun Mary Katharine and I had thinking up these rhymes at her house. And you should have seen me trying to keep a straight face at work looking online for pictures of The Bangles.

Without further adieu, I give you HamNation.

From Townhall's Top Ten User Blogs...

Please pardon my infrequent posting. This is the last week of class of my undergraduate career and with finding an apartment, finishing my thesis, and more, there just hasn't been time. Things will start to even out soon enough.

While I begin to play catch up, I thought I'd highlight a few recent posts from some of the other top blogs on Townhall.com.

*My hometown, Saint Louis, got a little nationwide attention because of our admirable archbishop, Raymond Burke. According to Reuters:

Calling Sheryl Crow "a high profile proponent of the destruction of innocent lives," the Roman Catholic archbishop of St. Louis resigned as head of a children's medical charity that featured the singer for a benefit concert.

Archbishop Raymond Burke resigned as chairman of the Cardinal Glennon Children's Foundation after its board of governors refused to pull the plug on Crow's Saturday concert in St. Louis.

She is "well-known as an abortion activist" and proponent of stem cell research, he said in a statement on Wednesday, and her appearance is "an affront to the identity and mission of the medical center, dedicated as it is to the service of life and Christ's healing mission."

Catmann, who operates Rounds Out! on Townhall, had this to say:

Now I know what some of you will say, "If it's raising money to help the children, what's the big deal?"

It may not be a big deal if you feel that way, but to a principled and faithfull man like Bishop Burke, it means a great deal.  How can the Church allow someone who advocates the taking of unborn human life to raise money for that same Church?  Makes sense to me.

I'll have more to say about this later.

*Mike brings some more disturbing information about the VA Tech tragedy to the Townhall community's attention: "There was absolutely no connection between him and his victims."

*Snooper says: "Fred, just do it!!"

*Jevica is disappointed in the recent PBS documentary on Islam(ofacism), saying "it could have just as easily been scripted by CAIR propagandists."

*The Internet is buzzing with talk of carbon credits and their effectiveness. Gunny has strong words about the situation: "What is a hoot is that super rich moonbats like Al Gore create massive carbon footprints with their 28,000 sqft houses and private jets while demanding that the rest of us relocate to the Stone Age!"

*Where can you get an oil change and a filling? Ask Madeline's Dad.

*James Biga has a bold proposition for us all:
"There are many that would claim that if a self proclaimed good person killed an evil person that they would cease to be good. I beg to differ." Click here to read more.

Malkin in Missouri

In about an hour and a half, Michelle Malkin will address an audience at St. Louis University.

With any luck, I'll find someone who wrote about the event and post some comments later.

Catching up with John Combest's site

I've been so busy this week that I haven't even visited one of my top three most frequented websites--www.johncombest.com. (The only two sites I visit more are www.gmail.com and www.townhall.com.)

For those of you who are new to this site, JohnCombest.com is a complete source for Missouri political news and a state affiliate in the National Journal's The Hotline Political Network. Don't care what's happening there locally? Fine. But you might want to pay attention to how national politics play out in Missouri. From Wikipedia:
Missouri has a longer stretch of supporting the winning presidential candidate than any other state, having chosen with the nation in every election since 1904 with the exception of Adlai Stevenson in 1956.
Here's a few things that caught my eye looking back on the week, many of which are of national interest:

Mitt Romney's Missouri expenditures

School vouchers: A good alternative

Blunt outpaces Nixon, 2 to 1, while Nixon has 4 times the donors

Hunting for voters, or for partisans?

Missouri abortion measure set aside

Blunt creates task force to help ensure campus safety

Campaign donation causes stir

Planned Parenthood out of classroom if bill passes

Blunt praises Supreme Court abortion ruling

Nixon makes statement on partial-birth abortion ruling

Slay: Hillary and I are Super pals

Rep. Carnahan to headline reproductive-rights rally in Kirkwood

Missouri will mourn tomorrow for Va. Tech

Thanks for all the links, John. (And I'll email you back soon, I promise.)

Important Virginia Tech links

My heart goes out to the Virginia Tech community, as well as all those families and friends who are mourning and suffering today.

I was happy to hear that the presidential candidates have cancelled most of their plans for today out of respect for the tragedy. Likewise,
it just wouldn't be right to make a round-up of political links this morning, so I've put together a few important blog posts, a column, and a video all about Virginia Tech instead.

Please continue to pray for all those damaged by yesterday's massacre--and for our entire nation--as the healing and the investigation continue.

Are you a Missourian looking to draft Fred Thompson?

You've got company.

(I don't know why, but this song just popped in my head. Don't get me wrong, I may hop on the Fred bandwagon myself, so it's not that I think this particular company is actually bad... Anyway, enjoy the music video.)

Only Mary Katharine...

...can get away with asking this kind of question.
“I’m just sayin’, if it came down to it, would you be ready for something like that?”
Check out her latest column for the context and the response.

Tony Snow to deliver Catholic University commencement address

I am proud to announce that Tony Snow will be the speaker at my graduation!
“I have long admired Tony’s objectivity and integrity as a journalist,” says Very Rev. David M. O’Connell, C.M., Catholic University’s president. “His current position as White House press secretary has provided him with an incomparable stage upon which to bring those qualities to bear in the work that he does. Sitting next to him at a White House dinner last summer, I was impressed with his sincere manner, good humor and the ease with which he spoke of the role faith has played in his life. I am sure than in recent days his faith has been both tested and strengthened. His acceptance of my invitation to CUA, as he continues to battle cancer, demonstrates that faith and strength. We are proud to welcome him to campus” says Father O’Connell.
And to all interested media folks:

For more information or to make arrangements to cover the university’s main commencement exercises, contact Chris Harrison or Katie Lee in the CUA Office of Public Affairs by calling 202-319-560.

I was obviously excited for the big day, but now I can hardly wait! I wonder what the protocol is for live-blogging your own graduation? I might be able to pick up a wireless signal out there on the Basilica lawn...

(Don't worry. I'm only kidding... sort of...)
