Taking Note of Sex-Selective Abortion Crisis

Kudos to St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist (and St. Louis native) Colleen Carroll Campbell, whose column on sex-selective abortions was included in The Week magazine as one of the four best columns in the United States in the June 13, 2008 issue of the weekly magazine. You may need a subscription to view the link to The Week, but you can read the column in full by clicking here.

As an aside, three of the four best columns from last week were written by tried-and-true conservatives.

The Doctor is Back

Jennifer Roback Morse is back writing for Townhall.com and you can look forward to her work in a future issue of Townhall Magazine as well. Her regular web columns will focus on the social and cultural impact of same-sex marriage and other family issues.

Here's her column for today.

The Varying Impact of Gas Prices

The New York Times has an incredible interactive map online. Be sure to click through the different tabs and explore around a little.

A few highlights:
  • On the "gas prices" map, it looks as though Missouri has the lowest gas prices--or at least has the most counties with the lowest gas prices. Kudos to the Show Me State.
  • The county with the lowest median income in the United States is Buffalo County, S.D. This stat struck me because I spent yesterday afternoon with South Dakotans. (A friend pointed out to me that many South Dakota counties are the poorest in the country. Glance at the top of this list if you're interested.)
The map doesn't specify if diesel prices are factored into this chart. It seems to me that the poor in rural areas are spending the biggest percentage of their income on gas, plus they are more inclined to need diesel fuel.

Calling Bloggers Names

The only show I follow religiously is Top Chef.

Check out what one of the three remaining contestants on the show thinks about bloggers. Click through the link above to read the whole story from The New York Daily News.

To be fair, she's not exactly referring to those that do great work, break news, or are otherwise awesome, ahem, but rather the folks who leave snarky comments about her appearance and sexuality on blogs. The featured quote, however, is elitist and there's no getting around that.

Good News Out of Iraq

You might not have heard about this, but this is hugely important for progress in Iraq:
Neighborhood councils such as the one in Jazera are taking responsibility for a wide range of local affairs, an important step in the U.S. plan to improve security and give Iraqis a bigger stake in their own country.

PTI

Pardon the interruption, all. Things have been busy with the magazine and I haven't been blogging as much as I'd like.

To dive right back in, isn't this little gem amusing?
